You don't need anything but the sword to kill him. This is one of the most annoying parts of the game, because there's no one thing you can do to kill him. Just find a combination of moves that hurts him in some way. If you examine him, it will tell you how wounded he is. Keep hurting him, and once he's injured, try things that got you killed before. Eventually you'll beat him.
