This is what bugs me the most. It's technically okay to use the "he or she" construction- awkward and unecessary, I think, but technically correct. But using a plural as a singular neuter pronoun is *always* wrong (Hehee- you did it in your post! Can you spot it? ^_^) and I don't think it's a good solution at all.

Darien tells me using "she" as the neuter is also always wrong, but I don't know about that.
