It's what you do with the fork. I eat European-style, too.

European (or Continential): Knife in right hand, fork in left. Cut meat, lift left hand with fork with meat bit into mouth.

American: Knife in right hand, fork in left. Cut meat, put knife down, switch fork to right hand, lift right hand with fork with meat bit into mouth.
