A question about the Bible

I have a question about what I suppose is a less-than-significant part of the Bible. I've always beleived in the inerrancy of the Bible, and I know many of you do as well. It is from those who do who I'd like to hear an answer from, not those who do not.

Compare Matthew 1:2-17 with Luke 3:23-38. You will notice that they both have very different genealogies listed for Jesus (or, more accurately, His father Joseph). I realize a couple of the differences are for things like Arni, who was also called Ram, but I can't possibly imagine that the rest of these people all have multiple names they went by. Likewise, there is a vast difference in the number of generations from Abraham to Jesus. What's going on here?
