I finally got off of my lazy tail and bought the three Myst novels, thanks to various encouragements from RinkyDinks... not to mention being generally fascinated by the games and wanting more. I just finished the Book of Ti'ana and enjoyed it very much.
In my mind, one of the best parts is the "ooooh, I get it!" factor... I've played Myst, Riven and am working through Exile (the third game, which rules unbelievably), and as I read through this book certain things from the games made SENSE. Little moments of revelation as backstory came to light. (In particular, Atrus' monologue in the introduction to Exile makes a LOT more sense now, as does the reason WHY... the starting point in Exile's plot exists. No spoilers here, go play the game - it's incredible!)
You certainly don't have to read the books to make sense of the games, but it enriches them a lot. ;) So... er... another enriching experience, thanks to RinkyDinks. Huzzah.
