It always strikes me as odd when I hear a
British actor on a British television show or
British movie doing a faked American accent.

I'm thinking mainly of the actress who played
"Peri" on Doctor Who when Colin Baker played
the Doctor. Our local PBS station here used to
air Doctor Who on Saturday nights several
years ago, and I became a fan. I saw a
number of the Colin Baker / Peri episodes,
and it became a hobby of mine to listen to her
talk and try to spot her "true" British accent
peeking through the acting.

Is it only me, or do most people not think of the
way they speak as an accent? The way I
speak is, to me, "normal," and anything else is
an (unbelievably cool) accent. Have we talked
about this here before?
