I could tell several bus breakdown stories. The first one is free.
This was 1970. We were driving our 1965 Volkswagen Microbus, which we called "the bus," and it was to be the trip of a lifetime. With WMM and our four kids ages 4 to 13, we had stared from Tennessee to San Francisco to attend a national convention of teachers. Behind us was our faithful pop-up camper. At Rabbit Ears Pass, Colorado, a valve broke and the head of it went through the piston and into the crankcase along with parts of the piston. A blown engine. A tow truck got us into Steam Boat Springs where there were no VW parts, and certainly no engine to fit the bus. So we bought a used Chevy, hitched up the camper and continued on to SF and the convention. Later, we went to LA, Carson City, and Yellowstone. I still have nightmares about those two stone towers that gave Rabbit Ears Pass its name.
