There is one more thing that I'd like to add at this point: "Stephan" is the name of a saint (!) of the catholic church (cf. "The Holy Stephanus", 26th of December). This coincides with a rule that in German you are not allowed to separate "st" (strictly speaking for syllibification only, but I am good at free adaptations) meaning that I abbreviate my name as: "St. Wilms" :-)
