I looked at the first page of it. Alarm bells began going off in my brain. Loads of 'em.

I've seen something like this before, a long time ago. One person writes one page of a story and gives the reader choices, subsequent readers are supposed to continue it. A noble experiment reaching the heights of human imagination, or the internet version of the campfire circle stories we used to tell at camp? You be the judge.

Whatever its aspirations, things like this generally get taken over by the lamest common denominator. People that haven't had an interesting or original idea for quite a while. People with the literary abilities and syntax of a cat walking on a keyboard. Often, people who were born quite recently.

Sure, once in a while someone writes something interesting, or actually builds upon the previous part of the story, but I've seen that the next writer either completely changes the scene to fit his/her idea, or does the literary version of kicking over sandcastles. It's all the more depressing when the story that got obliterated was one that held promise.

I believe that for these things to work, there needs to be a concerted effort to build on the story in a respectful fashion.

I'm gonna go to that site and try to do just that. You know, lead by example.
