The lack of available nicknames is the one thing I don't like about my name. My name is Layla. What kind of nicknames are available for THAT name? When I was in grade school, one boy came up with "Layla Payla," and he couldn't think of anything better. Of course, that's also a good thing, because bad nicknames are worse than having no nickname at all.

As for middle names, I don't know if it's worse to have no middle name or to have several of them. I currently have an assortment of middle and last names, and I've never even been married. It's difficult when people ask me what my middle name is, because the answer is still open for debate. Personally, I prefer to not list a middle name at all unless someone demands that I do so. And that middle initial stuff doesn't work for me, either.
