But if the sections were airtight, they would explode under the pressure of the boiling water when there was a fire. Then on top of fire damage and water damage, you would have to deal with high pressure jets of boiling steam. Come to think of it, if they're thin enough to be cut through easily, they might burst on a hot day (or a cold day, if it freezes). You would need to allow for a fair amount of expansion.
