Insanity Abounds
This was the most stressful period time of my wife's life. Not only was she getting married on Saturday, she had to be moved out of her house on Sunday, had to defend her Ph.D. on Monday, and then move to New York where we had no place to live.
Yep, she became a Mrs. and a Ph.D. all in the same weekend.
Luckily, we had the wife's family there to help pack up everything she had and put it in the back of a large U-Haul trailer. When I say "everything", I mean "everything". One of her younger sisters thoughtfully placed an open box of baking soda in one of the kitchen boxes. We discovered this about two weeks later.
We managed to load up everything and headed over to Austin, where I lived, to finish packing up everything I owned. After that, we drove to Alabama where my mom and step-father live, to pack up even more things that I didn't realize I owned and it turns out we own a lot of things. But before Alabama...
Didn't We Have a Car?
It took a bit longer to move out of my apartment in Austin. It was just the two of us instead of us and our extended families. I also made the mistake of notifying the apartment complex's office thirty days instead of thirty-one days before I was moving out that I was moving out so they wanted EVEN MORE MONEY. I wound up getting a money order for the rest of the rent to the evil woman at the apartment complex who wound up cashing it and pocketing the money which meant that the compassionate collection agency would start a nation-wide manhunt for me to get $200 stinkin' dollars.
So we left Austin and said a fond farewell to our car. You see, it was on a car trailer, which was hitched to the back of the rental truck, but, due to the steep angle of the apartment complex's driveway and the sharp right turn, the trailer popped off of the hitch, the wiring to the trailer's lights ripped out, and our car went *klunk* and rested in the middle of the road.
Meanwhile, we drove on, remarking how light the load seemed to be.
We got about a tenth of a mile when we realized that all the car honking... was for us! Yes! Right there in our rear-view mirror, our pride and joy, our Saturn SL1 was just sitting there, at the top of a hill, in the middle of a rather busy street.
We managed to re-hook it and took the trailer to the nearby U-Haul rental outlet. There, the friendly U-Haul people made us wait several hours until they could give us another trailer. I'm certain they were upset when they found out we really did spring for the supplemental insurance that covered exactly this exact thing. Exactly.
We finally left Texas.
