http://www.rinkworks.com and http://rinkworks.com are two different requests that will be directed to the same place, namely here. However, they are two different requests. "www" is considered a subdomain, similar to URLs like "http://membername.tripod.com". Most popular sites will be accessible both with the "www" and without, as you've found out. I had to trawl my bookmarks to find one that isn't:

http://www.georgehart.com exists. It's about maths.
http://georgehart.com does not.
