The last thing I had heard was that they were filming two sequels simultaneously, and were to start the process around now. I'm searching as I type this and this is what I'm finding:

- Filming of The Matrix 2 has begun at the Manex Studios in Alameda, California: http://www.thematrixonline.com/docs/2154.html

- From an August article in USA Today: "Two sequels are planned, the first for late 2002 and the second for summer 2003. They'll be shot back-to-back starting in late March or early April." http://www.usatoday.com/life/enter/movies/movies658.htm

- From Entertainment Weekly: "The sequels will shoot for 12 weeks in California and then shut down in anticipation of a strike...Afterward, filming will resume at Warner Bros. facilities in Australia." This article includes some vague quotes from Reeves, who says that the sequels will have more multi-person fighting and will use wires for more action. http://www.ew.com/ew/report/0,6115,101074~1~0~latestaboutmatrixsequels,00.html

- From upcomingmovies.com, the release date might not be until Christmas 2002: http://www.upcomingmovies.com/matrix2.html

As for the actual plots of the movies, about 98 percent of what you hear is just Internet gossip and speculation. The producers, writers and actors are being very tight-lipped about the whole thing, and that leads to even more wild guesses and unique theories. I imagine that, as the release date gets closer, there will be a few more genuine "leaks," but for now it's just a guessing game. However, it will be interesting to watch the marketing of the sequels, since they will coincide with the release of both Star Wars: Episode II and the Lord of the Rings movie.
