I have experiences like the above quite often... er... without the opium part. :) That is to say, I have dreams that become parts of my writing. The novel I'm trying to write right now actually begun with a single dream. I dreamed a scene that was extremely vivid (with all 5 senses involved, instead of only sight & hearing), and when I woke up I immediately went and wrote the entire scene down. That one dreamed scene evolved into the plot base for my novel.
