Mia's post about her first car took me back.
Everybody has heard me groan about having sold my '46 Ford, which was my first car. But before that, I drove my father's car. The one I learned to drive on was a '37 Ford with the tiny flat-head 60 horsepower V8. Then came that green '39 Nash that we called "old smokescreen." Next was a real car; 1949 Lincoln Zepher V12 sedan. I drove it to school and the girls..... Oh, never mind. It really wasn't that big a deal anyway. Then we had a 1951 Crosley wagon and a 1949 Kaiser. All were used cars, but then Dad bought a 1954 Ford sedan, new! It had the 223 inch six and a three speed stick. It had so much torque it would burn rubber going into 3rd gear. It wasn't much at high RPM's but the low end was terrific. That's very different from today's engines. It was about that time that I bought the '46 Ford and learned to drive conservatively. After all, I was paying for repairs on that one.
