My advice is to find a niche subject. For me, it's Chinese mythology. Write about something that no one else seems to be writing about- or take a common subject, and find a new angle. Also, don't be overly concerned with intellectual consistency- it can bog you down. I don't worry about if Kwan Yin lives on Mount Kunlun or Mount Meru- if I say it's Mt. Kunlun, than it is! Don't sweat the minor details. If you really want that consistency, edit it in later. I find that's a big problem with new Sci-Fi writers; they get so hung up on the science that they miss the boat on the fiction.
