We had a gifted programme when I was at school, but I think it was slightly different to what you have there.
In primary school it involved 2 separate things. Two 6th grade students where chosen from each school and we got to spend a day at another school designed for gifted students. It involved non-curricular work such as Synbolism studies, Latin Studies, etc. It was assumed that we would do all the rest of our work during the other four days of school. Which depressed me, because even on only four days general schooling, I still topped the class.
Then in 7th grade it changed to being an extra day on Saturday which was at the High School, and we could choose the subjects we wanted to study.
Once we started High School, our classes became teacherless, and we were given the subject syllabi and allowed to work our own curriculum. I think I still topped science, maths and english for my 3 years of involvement.
One thing I discovered afterward was that it was an experimental stage and we were part of the experiment to see if it would work. I don't think the teachers liked it much :-)
