I was sitting on the floor with a book on the coffeetable, and I had a candle lit next to my book. Now I am always careful with candles: I never leave them unattended, and I always buy sturdy candles that can't be knocked over easily. So I'm reading, and my cat jumped onto the coffeetable so that she could sit on my book. I was very involved in my book, so I absently brushed her away. She sat down and watched me. Suddenly I smelled buring hair. I instantly looked at the cat, and she must have realized what was happening the same time I did, because we both jumped in the air at the same moment. We were both terrified, and I scooped her up to see the damage. She was verrrry lucky--there was no burn, just a patch of scorched fur. The poor cat was scared, but I petted her and gave her some kitty treats and she calmed down. I felt awful when I saw her trying to groom the area--burnt hair probably tastes disgusting. So I must buy candle cages.

Wow. I'm glad I haven't been burning candles since I got my kitty... With her curiosity and my terrible habit of leaving the things unattended and her big poofy tail, I can GUARANTEE that there would have been an accident by now...
