No fair!
You're comparing a short, one-line quote, neatly marked, with a long, multi-line quote that has been marked in a shoddy manner. Of *course* the first one's going to be easier to read!
In my experience, the "neatly boxed" method can be at least as hard to make out with multi-line quotes as your second example above.
And the "markers down the left margin" method is not at all difficult to read *if it's done properly*.
