My mother was born without a sense of smell. Some doctors have told her that she would not be able to taste the difference between chocolate and vanilla ice cream. She can. She likes stronger, spicer foods, becaue her sense of taste *is* affected. But I think it has compensated for the lack of smell in that she can taste a lot more than she is "supposed" to. I think that if anyone were to loose smell after having it, this wouldn't be the case.
