I am British and work in London (though I don't live there - uech!) and I'd have to say, you're lucky to hear English language in any form some days!! But being entirely candid, I think most British people would have to admit that an "Amercian" accent can be irritating when placed among us. However, in its natural habitat, the American English is most attractive to listen to and I, for one, do recognise that you have a myriad of varieties when it comes to accent/dialect, just as we do here. I just think it's really important to preserve this kind of identity that attaches us to a particular place. so many of us Brits now speak something which has been nominated "Estuary English" - it's appalling frankly. A sort of accommodation of the Queens English within the Essex dialect (which has to be heard to be believed). And another thing that is apparently happening to us, as a result of the raft of Australian soaps we have access to, is that the young people are growing up with completely different intonation in their language, to that of their elders. Crikey - do I sound like someone on a soap box, or what??? :O)
Bina'loves a language debate'.
Isn't that weird? I think just about everyone is intrigued by an accent. I just wonder if anyone from a different country finds the American accent attractive. The impression I got when I lived in London was that my accent irritated people. > > --Jez"I hope it wasn't me"zika
