There's a simple explanation of this: full understanding of the laws of drama, and extensive experience with most storytelling methodology.

Simply put, there comes a point at which you really *have* seen it all. When you get to that point, it's almost impossible for anything to happen in a movie or TV show that surprises you, because you'll see it coming long before it happens.
