For my mom's 55th birthday, I wrote out a list of "Fifty Five Things I Learned From My Mother." One of them was "To touch old people," because she reminded me before a visit to her house when she also had her mother-in-law for an extended stay that one thing people lose as they lose their mates and their friends and their children is human contact. I kept it in mind for the visit, and frankly, I do think it made us both (the mother-in-law and I) feel better.
