It provides many entry-level jobs. This keeps the prices somewhat higher, but not a large amount. The biggest cause of high prices is lack of competition in local, isolated markets. Most people won't drive 30 miles to get gas a few cents cheaper. The kind of station makes a big difference, too. A name brand gasoline company will cost about 30 to 40 cents more than gas from Safeway or Costco. And it's all the same gas, no matter where you go.
