But all they did was pump our gas. No windshields cleaned, oil checked, etc. There was also a full-service gas station off I-95 in New York City and THEY actually washed our windshield too. > > > > Grishny > > Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Oregon is the only state in the country that does not allow customers to pump their own gas. I grew up an hour south of the Oregon border, so we sometimes drove up there to go shopping. We didn't have to pay sales tax, and the gas station attendants would pump our gas for us. If it wasn't too busy, they would sometimes clean the windshield while they were at it. > > With Oregon being the exception, I agree with Grishny. Full Service pumps are becoming rare novelties. I pulled into a Shell station on Friday afternoon and almost went to the Full Service pump, rather than the normal Self Serve pumps. It took me by surprise, because I rarely see ANY Full Service pumps at gas stations anymore. With the price of gas steadily rising, why should we pay another 10 cents a gallon when it's not necessary? Until about five years ago, my grandma had never pumped her own gas. However, even she has made the switch and now fills up her own tank without thinking twice. > > Ell"Shell MasterCard user"myruh
OK, now here's the interesting thing. In my part of Canada, at least, the full serve and self serve gas stations usually have the same price. There are some exceptions to this rule, but for the most part, it's all the same. Why, then, would anyone ever use self-serve, you ask? Well, Amanda had a problem one time with telling a guy to put $10.00 worth in the tank, but he filled it up, and the full serve guys often don't do a spectacular job cleaning the windows (when they have time to do them.) So yeah, full serve is good, but the people who work there aren't always the best trained. I think that "hit-and-miss" aspect keeps the prices down to self serve levels, but I really don't know for sure...
