> I have recently (very recently) decided that I am going to try out for my college's production of The Hobbit. I have never read it, but am going to go over a really good summary of it. My problem is that I have never been a drama person. This is my second semester at college and in my entire life I have only tried out for the one acts last semester. Needless to say, I didn't make it, but I felt lucky to be able to get the practice. I think it should have been a learning experience, but I don't know what exactly I learned - I didn't really pick up any tips. We were reading from the scripts which no one had seen and I have really good eye contact and projection, and I have never seemed nervous when I do public speaking things. The only thing I could think of that may have hindered me last time was where I filled the sheet out saying I had absolutely no drama experience. Is that really all that important if the audition is done well?

Hum mum mum (that's my way of saying "hmm"). All I can say is do your best. When you're trying to get a job as a professional actor it's important that you have experience, but since it's college drama that doesn't seem too important. Be sure to mention that you auditioned for that last thing, even though you didn't get it.

Since you say you have good projection and eye contact, you should be fine.

When you're on stage with other people, pretend the audience doesn't exist. Same with the audition. Pretend they aren't there.

I wish I could give more tips, I really want to, but I'm afraid I don't know as much as I like to think I do (if you understood that).

I think the fact you haven't read The Hobbit might help you better, give you a fresh view on the story. People who have been fans for a long time talk to other people about it, and their views on it get changed, maybe even subconsciously (I think I spelled that wrong, LOL).

Again: Do your best. IF you don't make it this time, and you want to try for another thing later, do your best again.

Finally: Believe in what you're saying. Or at least ACT like you believe what you're saying.

Qua "only read a little of The Hobbit, wants to take Drama when she goes into college" rtz
