That's what you get for mixing up a language out of a whole bunch of others. "Coneys" come to us from Latin (cuniculus). "Rabbits" come to us through one of the Germanic languages, I guess. Somehow or other, one becomes the Right Word To Use, and the other just hangs around in regional dialects and fantasy novels written by Anglo-Saxon Studies professors.
I always assumed that was where the name "Coney Island" came from, too. Maybe there were lots of rabbits there once? I doubt there are many now.
