I agree with you. Not only is it nicer and more natural to just think of people around me as "people," it's less of a strain on my mental faculties.

For example:

My wife is a person to me. If I had to classify her "race" I would say "white" or "caucasian." I do not and could not think of her as an "English-Irish-Spanish-Puerto Rican-New Englander," or to put it more simply, a "European-Hispanic American." Waaay to confusing.
