I think that the 4 or 5 home schooled children I've taught have actually done that. It wasn't necessarily planned that way, but that is how it's worked out.

They all seemed to come into difficulty (excessive shyness, or just not getting the best out of the educational system available at school) around the age of 10 and go into home schooling then, and then return to conventional schooling around 15-16.
