I've never been to the ramp festival, mainly because I don't want to taste one. After I heard that story about the bears*, I was sure I would *never* want to taste one or be around anyone who has. I'm told that the ramp is the strongest member of the onion/garlic family.

*That Story About the Bears

According to GSMNP folklore, you don't have to worry about the bears when hiking in the spring.
It seems that the bears come out of hibernation very hungry and they gorge themselves on ramps, so that you can smell their breath up to a mile away.
