I think you should first of all have another *private* talk with your boss and tell him how you feel. Maybe he thinks that his employees like his hands-off approach, and if he discovers that this is in fact not the case, he will begin to change the way he does things.

You are to be commended for doing your best under less than desirable circumstances. Don't let that slip--hold on to your personal work ethic, because even if it doesn't get you anywhere in this job, it will certainly distinguish you in the future as you move on to other situations.

If you discuss this with your employer and he seems unwilling or unable to change things, then, well, perhaps it's time to move on.
