Yes I would have put the cat in safekeeping, and I would have let the owners *know* where their pet is. They had time to leave a note, why not a name? (Also, the shelter nearby is very nice and clean, and the people there are competent.) The people who left the note said they would call us over the weekend, and that we would have our pet back by Tuesday. We haven't heard from them, and it is now Wednesday. So, the answer to your question is no, I would *not* have handled it as they have.
