Unfortunately, Don, women just can't hitchhike anymore, or pick up hitchers. My best friend picked up a hitchhiker, and he....he...MARRIED her!!! I hear that Scandinavia is still safe for women hitchers, however.
Anyway, I would love to post the stories my family tells, but they demand a more oral presentation, plus they (of course) involve a lot of sex, drugs and some really gross details.
Here's my absolute favorite though:
My mom was hitchhiking through Indiana, when a man picked her up and took her a few hundred miles. They talked and smoked all night, and he asked her if she read any of his books, like Slaughterhouse 5 and Cat's Cradle. She hadn't, but she read them the next time she got a chance. She didn't tell me this story until she saw me reading a Kurt Vonnegut book, back when he was my favorite author.
