Growing up I would have said Frank Dixon, author of the Hardy Boys series. But I just read one of my old HB books last summer, and could't believe how shallow and obvious the plot was. But then, those books are intended for younger readers. They're good for the age group for which they're intended.

I read some short mystery stories by Alfred Hitchcock once that were good. But I think those were written for young readers too. I'm not sure what he's written for older audiences that hasn't been made into a movie.
