Gore Elected! ... to Soil Board

Al Gore has been elected ... but not to the office he sought.

Thanks to 23 write-in votes, Gore was elected volunteer district director of the Marion Soil and Water Conservation Board in Oregon, the Associated Press reported today.

Because no candidate sought the job, all 4,570 votes were write-ins. Gore beat President-Elect Bush, radio shock jock Howard Stern and John Doe, among other write-ins, for the district seat.

"That must be the most successful campaign that we never ran," said Jim Edmunson, chairman of Oregon's Democrat party.

But even this victory is bittersweet. Donald Duck got more votes than the lame-duck vice president but was disqualified as an animated character.

Of course, no one could accuse Gore of being animated.
