Mine seldom do that. You just have get the knack for extending the lead out just the right amount. Too short, and it runs out too fast and you're digging grooves into your paper with the end of your pencil. Too far, and the lead snaps off. I have it down to a fine art now.

My sister used to do it from the car. No matter where we were. She'd just sit by the window waving at people in other cars.
