Martinique: part cinq

If Barbados is England, Martinique must be France. We even docked in a place called Fort-de-France. Most place names are French and the people drive Renaults. They tell me that even the food is French, but we always ate on board ship. That way, if we got sick, we'd know who to fuss at. (We didn't.) The seaports on these islands tend to face west. I think they like the sunsets. Almost all of the islands are volcanic, but Martinique has a real killer. In 1902 an eruption wiped out the town of St. Pierre and killed 30,000 people. Pelee, the offending volcano, stood out threatenly against the sky as we sailed past. Few people live on that end of the island, even after 98 years. However the town of St.Pierre was rebuilt just to the south of the old location. You can still tour the ruins.
Next: Sint Maartin/St. Martin
