Your friend didn't think about what he was about to say. People consider the stuff by Beethoven and Mozart and Bach to be classics because (1 it's appealing to almost everyone, (2 they were geniuses, (3 classical music is considered a status symbol, and (4 there are some really interesting mathematics present in some of the classics.

Rap or Disco or Britney Spears won't be considered 'classics' as such-- more likely, they'll be resold on Golden Oldies albums to us when we're old and senile.
