NOW I recognise that line! The Granny Weatherwax books were my favourites when I started reading Terry Pratchett, but the City Watch ones beat them by the merest fraction of a hairsbreadth. Mainly because I love noir, and "Guards! Guards!" has some brilliantly funny parodies of it. Also because Vimes is simply the greatest character ever.
