We're both off the hook. Marmite was invented in Britain.

...Vegemite, on the other hand, was invented in Australia, entirely independently of Marmite (but several decades later).

And apparently enough people like it that it's An Australian Icon, even though the company that makes it was bought out by the Americans years ago.

ObTrivia: In 1928, faced with declining sales, the makers of Vegemite decided to try renaming their product "Parwill". It didn't last long; even then, people thought it was a dreadful pun...
