Uh, what exactly about "Encounter at Farpoint" was campy? One thing I thought TNG and all the other entries in the Star Trek franchise did *right* was steer clear of the cheese and the laughs for the most part. Sure, it was chock full of cliches and techno-babble, but for the most part all the ST franchise entries are also chock full of decent-to-excellent actors who can play a serious roll perfectly without resorting to too much cheese and camp. Sure, a bunch of episodes and scenes within the episodes are played for laughs, but playing something for laughs and being cheesy are entirely different things.
