I was just talking to someone in chat about this sorta stuff, then i found this post... I thought maybe Dave or someone could explain to me how this works... This being why you have to be moving relative to the earth, and it can't be moving relative to you...

Chrico: The earth is NOT, i repeat NOT moving at the speed of light. It is moving at about 40,000 miles per second in orbit around the sun. If you create a engine of some sort that could blast the Earth at near light speed, everybody on Earth would die due to lack of heat, lack of photosynthesis and lack of McDonalds. In other words, the Earth would be a giant comet.

Jimmy_Of_York: well, my real question is, which would be effected by that, the ship or the earth, since both are moving at light speed relative to eachother

Chrico: Things moving excerience time slower, so, getting back to your first question, while you experience 100 years at light speed (whether you are on Earth or on the space ship thingymajig) it would be near to a billion years elsewhere.

Jimmy_Of_York: it would be earth moving at the speed of light away from you.... so wouldn't it be a hundred years for them and LOADS of years for you? but then again, the space ship is moving away at the speed of light relative to earth, so it would be the same for them, LOADS of years on earth, 100 years on the ship...
