There was that Madeleine L'Engle book the title of which I don't recall where mitochondria were sentient.

The book was either "A Wrinkle in Time" or "A Wind in the Door", more likely the latter I think. I had both of these, plus "A Swiftly Tilting Planet" (which was the third book about the same characters) when I was a kid and they were really great.
