There's a story by Orson Scott Card, in which a woman gets a wish from a dragon, but decides to save it for an emergency. And every time an emergency comes up, she decides to do whatever she can by herself first - after all, she can always use the wish if she needs it, and if she doesn't she'll still have it when a *real* emergency comes along. And when she's on her aged death bed many decades later, with a great reputation in the region, she still hasn't used the wish.
