Over here in Orygun we simply have to visit the DEQ (Department of Enviromental Quality) check center prior to renewing your license plate tags (every 2 years). All they do is stick a sensor into your tailpipe and measure your emissions. There's no other type of inspection required. Based upon the other posts in this thread, it sounds as though there are a number of criteria that must be passed.
It's pass/fail. You only have to pay for it if you pass. There's no sticker, but simply a receipt indicating that you've passed. Formerly, one would then have to go to the DMV to renew your tags. However, in recent years they've made changes to allow you to get your tags from DEQ at the time of your test. It's pretty convenient now, make one stop, write one check, see you in two years.
