Texas has a yearly inspection (with sticker), costs about ten bucks and can be done at nearly any gas station. Back in college, some stations looked more closely at cars than others did... They didn't seem to have quite as many people lining up for inspection.

New Jersey just went to a one every two year inspection. Free inspection if you get it done at the DMZ, er I mean the DMV, about $25 at an authorized inspection station (which are probably more strict than Texas' authorized inspection stations).
