It didn't begin too far before World War I, though - until sometime in the late nineteenth century, the country was known as Prussia. Try searching for that, and you'll have better luck. :-}
Oh, but, as for the middle ages, there wasn't a unified Germany. After Charlemagne came along there was a Holy Roman Empire (which was actually none of the three, interestingly enough), but that was really nothing but a collection of city-states anyhow.
