> What is the main difference between science fiction, and fantasy writing? Is there a distinction that seperates the two? I am wondering, because it just always seems to me that the two genres are grouped together. Anyone have any ideas?

Just to add my own thoughts: it's virtually impossiblie to clearly label and define any genre in any art form. What makes something a comedy? If it's funny? If a movie that is primarily dramatic has some funny bits, is it a comedy? No? What exactly is a drama then?

Pretty much all decent genre definitions will have to use words like "typically" and "usually" because too many things cross over genres and just aren't easily identifiable. There's no perfect definition, and certainly there's no decent simple one.
