The position is not so unsound, though your "only possible conclusion" is flawed. I believe the Bible is the "literally true Word of God" in its original form AND in the King James Version -- that both were created with God as their author.
It only makes sense, actually; it's internally consistent with what the Bible says (in either version) internally: that the Bible is the written Word of God and is everlasting: essentially, that it will never die. The languages the Bible was originally written in are dead.
I won't get involved in a debate about the truth or falsehood of this belief, but this should be at least enough to illustrate that this is not such a ludicrous belief that you imply.
